Love Dare -how are we doing

Since we have started the love dare I have noticed more of a loving tone in Marvin's voice. I have also noticed a change in myself how quick I bite my tongue. I have slipped up but have noticed it right away and then I am quick to apologize.
This weekend has been a very tiring weekend for the both us. Marvin helped so much with the remodel and he will finish up this week. Then I need to finish the decorating.
Today we served at Church and ended up being there from 7:30 to 1:00. I came home and crashed while Marvin did some odds and ends. So it is back to work for the week and then next weekend it will be cleaning and RELAXING....and then looking forward to Valentines weekend when our son Jeremy, our daughter in law Sara and granddaughters Kayla and Morgan will come to visit. So we have a lot to look forward too.

A job well done

I have to tell you that are daughter and her husband Ricky are such hard workers and gave us the best gift with a bathroom remodel and a paint job in the guest bedroom. The did an excellent job. We are not completely finished yet but the guest bedroom turned out great. I need to update the bedspread but that will come later.

Now for the bathroom. I decided I did not like the cream color so they had to repaint white on the medicine chest, moldings and vanity so this in not done yet. BUT the floor and vanity top, new lighting fixture and the Chutney paint are beautiful and I love it. I am posting a few pictures but I will post more as we complete.

Monday Day 6-Love Dare , Love its not irritable

Dare-"Choose today to react to tough circumstances in your marriage in loving ways instead of with irritation. Begin by making a list of areas where you need to add margins to your scheduled. Then list any wrong motivations that need to release from your life."

"He is slow to anger is better than the mighty, and he who rules his spirit, than he who captures a city" Proverbs: 16-32

The Accent Wall in the guestroom

Okay brace yourself......My accent wall is chocolate brown. I LOVE IT....The other three walls are cream.

Sunday Day 5- Love Dare-Love is not rude

Tomorrows (Sundays) Dare " Ask your spouse to tell you three things that cause him to be uncomfortable or irritated with you. You must do so without attacking them or justifying your behavior. This is from their prospective only"

"He who blesses his friend with a loud voice early in the morning, it will be reckoned a curse to him" Proverbs 27:14

I just barely started reading this chapter and immediately I see the word "sarcastic"
that is talking about Marvin and I both. Once again this goes back to saying something nice or saying nothing at all.

Then down further in the chapter I read that "the etiquette you use at him is much different than the kind you employ with friends or even total strangers." This is so true and I have recognized this for a while and have been working on it.

I am listing the three guiding principles for practicing etiquette in marriage:

"1. Guard the Golden Rule. Treat your mate the same way you want to be treated"
"2. No double standards. Be as considerate to your spouse as you are strangers and coworkers. "
"3. Honor requests. Consider what your husband or wife already asked you to do or not to do. If in doubt, then ask."

Tommorrow will be a perfect example of working through these steps. We are leading the Diaconate Team so working together is imperative.

The New dishwasher

Our new dishwasher is nice BUT it seems likes it takes longer to run a cycle. I never should have read the reviews as that is one complaint. I do know that it gets the dishes clean as we have already used it twice. Hope this brand Frigidaire works well for us because my old dishwasher was a Maytag.

Progress on the remodel

It has been a day for the worker bees and they are still going hard at work on the bathroom remodel and painting the guestroom. There were some plumbing issues with the sink pipes so Marvin and Ricky had to spend some time on that. Otherwise things are moving along.

For me after I made and cleaned up the Cinnamon roll mess I went out and got groceries by myself. Marvin and I usually go together but this time it was only me. I really hate to bag groceries but I did it and of course it started remaining while I was shopping. So after I got home and started my laundry (3 loads today) I made 2 salads. One was just a cucumber salad and the recipe for the other one is below from the Hungry Girl cook book. It is yummy. Then we had BLTs for lunch so I made that too. They are all asking for my taco salad tonight for dinner so we will see. I am just as tired as they are.

"I can't believe it is not potato salad"
Ingredients:
1 large head cauliflower, roughly chopped
6 hard-boiled egg whites, chilled and chopped
1/2 envelope ranch dressing/dip mix
1 1/2 cups fat-free mayonnaise
1/2 cup fat-free sour cream
3 tbsp. Hellmann's/Best Foods Dijonnaise
2 tbsp. fat-free non-dairy liquid creamer (like the one by Coffee-mate)
1 cup diced red onion
2 celery stalks, diced
1/4 cup chopped chives
3 tbsp. seasoned rice vinegar
2 tbsp. chopped dill
2 tbsp. chopped parsley
1/4 tsp. salt
Optional garnish: paprika

Directions:
Place cauliflower in a large microwave-safe bowl, and pour 1/3 cup water over it. Cover and microwave for 6 - 8 minutes (until cauliflower is soft). Meanwhile, in a medium bowl, mix together the ranch mix, mayo, sour cream, Dijonnaise and salt. Set aside. Once cool enough to handle, drain any excess water from the cooked cauliflower. Lightly mash just 2 cups of the cauliflower, and then place in a blender. Add creamer and puree or pulse until blended. (Don't worry if it isn't completely smooth.) Pour mayo mixture into the blender and mix until blended and creamy. Chop the rest of the cauliflower into small half-inch pieces. Place these cauliflower pieces in a large bowl, and add the onion, celery and vinegar. Toss and let sit for 5 minutes. Pour the blender mixture over the vegetables and mix well. Add the chopped egg whites, chives, dill and parsley, and fold them in. Chill for several hours. If you like, sprinkle with paprika just before serving. P.S. This stuff tastes EVEN BETTER the day after it's prepared! MAKES 10 SERVINGS

My yummy Cinnamon Rolls

I generally only make my yummy Cinnamon rolls on Christmas morning. It is a family favorite. I ended up not making them last year for a various reasons. So I thought it would be a treat this morning for Holly, Ricky and Marvin.

This is how it looked when I started

I like to make a butterscotch topping rather than frosting because it makes the rolls sticky and yummy.

I use
1/4 cup of melted margarine or butter
1/2 cup packed brown sugar
2 Tablespoons of corn syrup

I usually double that and then pour into a 9x13 cake pan.

I then follow the directions on the Hot Roll mix box for cinnamon rolls

Let the rolls rise for 30 minutes and then bake. This is the end result.

Love Dare Day 4-Love is Thoughtful

Today's dare is "Contact your spouse sometime during the business of the day. Have no agenda other than asking how he is doing and if there is anything you could for them" This one is going to be hard because we are going to be home all day working. Well I have to stay out the way and do laundry and feed the workers.

"How precious also are your thoughts to me....how vast is the sum of them! If I should not count them, they would outnumber the sand. Psalm 139;17-18

In reading this chapter I find it so true that thoughtlessness is a silent enemy to a loving relationship. I seem to take for granted all the things that Marvin does for me. I know I also do things that I am sure he takes for granted, We actually are a great team even though we communicate in a loud way.

3 grand dogs

Shane and Sheila are our grand dogs (the 2 black dogs) they came down with Holly today. Max is actually a grand dog too but he never left home/. He is a 12 year American Eskimo. He is actually our son Jeremy's dog but it never quite worked out for him to leave. So my house is full tonight with 3 dogs, 2 cats and 4 people. I love it...

Today-Friday

Wow so much has happened today. First off let me say for the day 3 Love Dare, I bought my spouse something big....A DISHWASHER...this was not a planned purchase. Last night Marvin noticed that water was standing in the bottom of our 15 year old dishwasher. Today after he got off work he checked it out more thoroughly and found out the pump was gone so instead of the $100.00 service call without parts and labor we decided to replace it, after all we did get our money out of our old one. So after work today we headed out to shop for the best deal. We went to 3 places and ended up with the best deal at Oldfields. Now mind you I had to use patience, kindness and unselfishness. As we speak they (my son in law Ricky and Marvin) are installing it which is kind of scary.
Ricky is finishing up on the bathroom, Holly is painting the guest bedroom and Marvin is installing the dishwasher (with some pointers from Ricky). I had to make up the huskerlaker room hide a bed for Holly and Ricky to sleep in. So stayed tuned
tomorrow for all the updates.

Love Dare-Day 3

Today the love dare is "Love is not selfish" The dare is to Whatever you put your time, energy, and money into will become more important to you. It's hard to care for something you are not investing in. Along with restraining from negative comments, Buy your spouse something that says, "I was thinking of you today".

"Be devoted to one another in brotherly love; give preference to one another in honor." Romans 12:10

A surprise today at work

This is it. Marvins love dare to me day 3

How can the cat sleep like this?

Yep, it is tiger the cat again. I can't figure out why he likes to hang over things. He favorite thing is to sleep on the back of the recliner. He must have good balance because he stays there for hours.

I love this magnet

I have this magnet on my file cabinet in my office that faces me so I can see it often.

I have to admit I am struggling

I am still on chapter 1 Love is patient. Maybe I am just being too hard on myself I don't know. I am trying to use this in my daily life not only with my spouse but with everything. I am really being challenged. But today I realized thanks to my friend Julie that working with my spouse is much more important. So tomorrow I am moving onto chapter 2 which is Love is kind. The love dare is "In addition to saying nothing negative to your spouse again today, so at least one unexpected gesture as an act of kindness"
The scripture that goes with this dare is
"Be kind to another, tender-hearted, forgiving each other, just as God in Christ also has forgiven you" Ephesians 4:32

Mckenzie aka Baby Kitty-the other cat

Here is a picture of our other cat baby kitty. She is 14 years old. She is a cry baby and is a scardy cat. Every night see insists on sleeping at my feet. She loves Marvin too but she is really my cat.

Day One - Love is patient-Book The Love Dare

I think that we are actually going to have to turn the days into chapters as we have decided not to move forward to the next day until we have succeeded on the particular task. So today is Love is Patient. The dare was to "resolve to demonstrate patience and say nothing negative to your spouse at all. If temptation arises, choose not to say anything" We flunked this morning.

The scripture that goes with this dare is: (1 Thessalonians 5:15 (King James Version)
"See that none render evil for evil unto any man; but ever follow that which is good, both among yourselves, and to all men."

So we are rereading the chapter again and trying for tomorrow. We both work all day so the challenge will be when we get home. Marvin gets home first and by the time I get home I am so tired and just want peace. So tomorrow actually will be a real test for me. I have been praying for patience for a long time.

I am trying to stop

This is a problem. I have a terrible sweet tooth.

Where is Tiger

No not Tiger Woods because I really don't care where he is. Sometimes we have to search the house for our cat Tiger. Our house really is not that large but Marvin goes crazy if we can't find him. So this morning we found him hiding again behind the cover we keep on the sofa because we have animals. He was not too happy when I snapped pictures of him. He is so hilarious and is our entertainment. He has made it very clear that he is the dominant pet in the house and he chases and slaps the dog all the time. Oh and when he is in his condo and Marvin or I walk by he slaps us sometimes too. I think he would actually fight me if I wanted to.

Punch in the eye

Last night while I was snuggling in my new comforter (21.99 at Ross) I was pulling the sheet up higher and wham I hit myself smack dab in the eye. Man that really hurt and today I feel like it is bruised. I wonder if this is something I (Janet) only would do. Anyway I love my new comforter.

Praying for Madicyn

Many of you know that I pray for many ill people on Caring bridge and Care pages. I have a special request for prayers for Madicyn. She is 23 years years old and is suffering from Crohns disease and ovarian cysts. She is in constant pain. Her mom Lynda and her have recently moved and are seeking new care. Please pray for healing and guidance for Madicyn and her mom Lynda. Please also pray that they get there furniture and belongings delivered soon. The moving company seems to have so many excuses.

Fireproof & The Love Dare

I am not exactly sure how this happened. I knew that the Movie Fireproof was recommended through our Church but we never took the time to go to the viewing or rent the movie.

While I was Christmas Shopping one day on my lunch break I headed over to the Christian Book Store in the Mall. I wasn't sure what I was looking for but I was drawn to the book "The Love Dare" I still did not even realize the relation of the book and the movie even though on the cover of the book it said "from the hit movie fireproof" I just thought the title was good and I wrapped it and put it under to tree to Marvin and I from Jesus. Marvin and I decided that we would start on the book the day after Christmas. I think we got to chapter 4 (out of 40) and stopped because we were having problems staying on the task (I am sure it was Satan) Anyway after being married for 30 years we both realized that we needed something, I am speaking for myself and I know sometimes that I say and do the wrong thing and it just makes things worse in my married life.

After looking at this book every morning sitting on the kitchen counter and talking to some friends at work they encouraged me to watch the Movie first because the book and movie are related. So I ordered the movie and tonight Marvin and I watched it for our DATE day. Oh my goodness, I do know that the Holy Spirit is at work in our relationship I just needed to open my eyes. So tomorrow in the morning we will be starting the book again. Chapter one is Love is Patient. I will update on our progress.

A new car perhaps or not

It is about time for Marvin to replace his car. He likes 2 door little sporty cars while I prefer bigger rigs like my SUV. I just like the room and I don't feel so compacted. When Marvin and I met 33 years ago he had a 1975 Camaro and before that he had a 1968 Camaro. So he has CAMARO on the brain. Now I personally think they are ghetto cars. That is not a good word but I don't know how else to describe it. It has small tinted windows and sits really low to the ground. So today (our date day) he tells me we are going to just go LOOK at cars. I really HATE to look at cars. In fact he usually brings home what he likes and then I go for a ride and he goes back and makes all the banking arrangements and deals and then I go sign. So today we went first to look at the KIA Forte Koup (that is really how it is spelled I think it is Japanese) anyway I really liked the look of the car and sat in it EXCEPT I did not like the instrument panel (I think that what you call it). We looked at a red one but he wants a black one or maybe silver. On to the next stop (which I thought was to Costco) but it was to see the Camaro (which is ghetto) oh I said that once. Anyway when I sat down in it I hit my ear like I often do in Marvins current vehicle (Alero). So now he has my input. Stay tuned the next few months take or give and we will see what he picks. Oh and the Camaro color he wants is blue.

Tiger is so cute

Our cat Tiger is so cute.

My dream last night about my sister Joan

I had the weirdest dream last night that I was going to the Vancouver BC Olympics with my sister Joan. The weird part wasn't that I was going to the Olympics but it was about going with my sister Joan. This is a real struggle for me to even BLOG about this subject but as painful as this is I think this dream had a message. Maybe it is the Holy Spirit working through it to give me insight of reconciliation.

So lets back up way up to about the end of June 2000 (yes that is almost 10 years ago) The family was all together to attend the funeral of my nephew Adam. (my other sister Joyce's son) Adam was murdered. He was 20 years old. It was a time of sorrow and it was a time to rejoice that Adam was with Jesus and he could never be hurt again. Anyway my sister Joan and her family left soon after the services and from that point on she decided to not communicate with the family.

Lets go back a little bit further to our childhood. I am about 15 months older than Joan. Joan and I were so close in fact I ended up in the same grade with Joan after I had a tough time in school due to many ill related issues. So everyone thought that we were twins. Joan had dark hair and green eyes and I had blond hair an blue eyes but it didn't matter we were sisters, yes we fought but most of the time we played really well. We were like inseparable. We shared a bedroom too. Joan even introduced to me via a blind date to my husband Marvin as she was dating Marvin's good friend Mike whom she is married too.

Lets jump back to the year 2000 when my sister Joan decided not to talk to me or other family members. We do not really know why. It is not that I haven't tried to contact to her because I have written letters, sent emails and even called and left messages. Still nothing. In the last 10 years she has missed my kids graduations, their marriages and my grandchildren. The biggest thing that she missed though is my spiritual growth. I have also missed out on the same with her family. So to get to the point she is choosing not to speak to me.

Back to the dream. In my dream I knew that we had not seen each other for a long time so I was so excited to see her. We met each other and were watching the parade. I had to go to the restroom and she said he would wait for me and then we were going to go shopping. She was not there when I came out and I searched everywhere for her and I could not find her. I was crying so hard and than I woke up. What could this mean?

I have prayed every night that she will come back to me. Although I know that if she does it will not be easy. But I am ready she just needs to call me.

We are woven from the same fabric.

Too close for comfort.

Our little one car garage causes me so many challenges. I literally have a couple of inches on both sides of clearance to get my big rig in. My mirrors fold in and sometimes they fold themselves in. I have actually got the mirrors stuck in the garage door rails. Marvin always bails me out. It not that I am a bad driver because I am a very cautious driver. It is just something about that small space. I think we need to move and get a bigger garage or I could get a smaller rig. But I like to sit up high so I don't want a car. Thought I would share just one of my small daily challenges.

Because I have cruise on the brain

No I am not planning a cruise. But I wish. I have a few co-workers that are either on or are going on a cruise. So I pulled this picture from our 2005 cruise (when I was much thinner) We had such a good time. My sister Joyce and her husband Scott went with us. Relaxing on the balcony reading a book while the ship was sailing. What a life. I hope that we can go on an Alaskan cruise within 5 years.

Guess where we are going

To see Bob Lacey & Sheri Lynch. They actually are coming to our town and we are going to a luncheon with them and probably about 200 other people. If you don't know Bob and Sheri are they are radio personalities. Marvin told me about how funny they are and I now tune in on the way to work every morning so I can get some good morning laughs or learn a few things. I can't wait to meet them.

A Real Dilema

I finally got around to ordering my new glasses. (since I have a new flex plan) Anyway I currently wear progressive rimless glasses (really spendy) This year I thought I would go over to the mall and order glasses from well you know a chain store. So while I am trying on the frames I really cannot see what they look like because I don't have really good vision. Anyway I go ahead and order. I picked them up them up yesterday and they are so UGLY. I hate them. It is a good thing that they have a 30 day guarantee. Tomorrow my friend Julie (that has very good taste) is heading over with me on our lunch break to find a new pair. In this picture my new ones are in the back.

A priceless surprise

Last weekend I received the most wonderful gift ever. It was a big surprise. It was in a big envelope that came in the US mail. When I opened it I had no idea what it was. Later I found out my siblings and all the grand kids also got one. What was it? It is a recipe book of my mom and dads most prized recipes. They include some of my grandmas recipes too. I treasure this gift not only because I collect cookbooks, but because these foods remind me of home (Nebraska) and my childhood. Thanks Mom and Dad for a one of kind gift from the heart.

Skyping to New York

I am so happy today that we got to skype with my daughter Jennifer her husband Matt and grand kids Emma and Logan. It really did make my day. Logan is talking so much and is a big boy at 2. Emma answered questions for us (Holly & me) It was a balmy 32 degrees in New York today and the snow was melting. Wow it is 51 and rainy here in Oregon. Wish it would snow here. Anyway I love to skype.

Some Color

Wow things are happening. Holly put our color on the walls this morning. Our colors are "Chutney and Cream" It is turning out beautiful. Actually this is the color that Holly and Ricky used in their master bathroom and it is very warm. I slipped out and went to Worship this morning while they all stayed and labored away. The process is definitely more than one weekend so when they leave this afternoon there will be more to finish. Here is a quick little peek.

some progress made

Tiles have been cut, the walls have been primed so we are making some progress. Don't you like how I say we. I can't wait to get some color on the walls. What I can say is that Holly, Ricky and Marvin having been working really hard today. We have had some funnies happen which caused us to pause and laugh. I mean really you should us saw us try to get everything in the SUV from Jerry's. We had to fold the seats down so that meant Holly and Ricky had to umm sit and lay down in the back. Poor Holly was on her tummy under the Hardy boards. I kept asking her if she could breathe and she said yes. I did not like that they were not seat belts but we live close by. Anyway Marvin was driving so he broke the law. Not me or no not me. This is probably the last post tonight since they have to stop so they can go to Dinner with Ricky's mom but they said after they get home tonight after a few drinks they will grout the tile. So I will start back up tomorrow.

This is where we are at

Ugh.....that is where we are at. Ricky and Marvin finally got all the flooring up and we ran into some slight issues. So we head to Jerry's to get some hardy board, a new toilet, a new sink, and a new facet. I have such a HEADACHE and I am not even helping. Ricky is laying the hardy board and Holly is going to start priming. Not sure if we will finish up tomorrow before they head home. Looks like they will have to make a trip back in 2 weeks. I just put the brownies in the oven and I am ready to head to the retreat of my bedroom. DUST is everywhere.......
